O’Neill holds meeting with MEP

Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill MLA has today met with Bairbre de Brun MEP.


This was the latest in a series of regular meetings initiated by the previous Minister aimed at fostering good working relationships between local MEPs and DARD and marked the first during the current Minister’s tenure.

Speaking afterwards the Minister said: “Today has been a great opportunity to engage directly and in depth with one of our three local MEPS. I took the opportunity at today’s meeting to identify and map out those key issues of strategic importance that have significance for us locally.”

She said: “I also raised the crucially important issue of CAP reform and stressed my determination to have the CAP budget preserved at existing levels of support. We also discussed the Commission’s review of Less Favoured Area designation, where we expect to see formal proposals later this year.”

She added: “I am seeking support from all our MEP’s towards ensuring our All Island Animal Health and Welfare Strategy is considered in any Commission discussion about new EU Animal Health legislation.”

Other issues discussed included;the Food Chain – “Fairness for Farmers”; European Ombudsman/Groceries Code Adjudicator Bill;DARD framework document for tackling climate change; and the end of milk quotas 2015.In conclusion, the Minister said: “I wish to thank Bairbre for taking time to meet me today and I look forward to meeting our other two MEPs later in the summer.”
