Ní Chuilín welcomes Cricket World Cup decision
Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has welcomed a decision by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to allow 14 nations to take part in the 2015 World Cup.
This overturns an earlier decision to restrict the tournament to the 10 full member nations – a move which would have excluded the Ireland team from the competition.
Speaking at Stormont where the Minister watched Ireland play Namibia in the second of the two day matches between the teams in the Intercontinental Cup, the Minister said: “As the Ireland team showed at the last World Cup, they are more than capable of competing with the best cricketing nations in the world.
“It is only right and fair that they are given the opportunity to participate in 2015. Earlier this year, the team’s record-breaking performance to beat England not only resonated with cricket fans across the island, but did much to raise the profile of the sport here.”
