Adams welcomes closure of Creevelea Nursing Home

5 July, 2011 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin TD for Louth and East Meath Gerry Adams has welcomed the decision by Drogheda District Court to close the Creevelea nursing home in Laytown.

Mr. Adams said:

“The situation in Creevelea, and the recent controversy around Rostrevor Nursing Home in Dublin, raise understandable worries among many citizens about the conditions in private nursing homes and the regulations under which they operate.”

The Sinn Féin leader, who last week raised the issue of Creevelea nursing home in the Dáil, said:

“The decision to close Creevelea was the right decision. But there remain serious questions to be answered about how long the appalling conditions found in Creevelea had been going on and why they weren’t uncovered earlier.

“I have asked a series of questions of the Minister in this respect and intend pursuing him on this matter.

“The fact is that the families of many of our elderly citizens resident in private nursing homes across this state are deeply concerned at conditions in those homes and want reassurance that every measure possible is being taken by government to protect residents.”
