Women in business leadership essential: de Brún
In keeping with a vote in the European Parliament today which intends to 'afford competent and qualified women access to jobs that they currently have difficulty in accessing' Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has called on the Assembly and local businesses to examine this issue within their own organisations.
Speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg the MEP said, 'Women across Europe continue to be poorly represented in the higher levels of both the private and public sectors. Today's vote addresses this issue and proposes measures to ensure that talented members of the workforce in the EU are not being discriminated against because of their gender.
'By setting attainable quotas we can ensure that areas such as boards of directors and higher managerial positions are no longer out of reach for women who are equally as qualified as their male counterparts, and who aspire to these positions.
'Women from migrant backgrounds are also mentioned in the hope that they too can benefit from a tangible increase in their visibility in positions of leadership.
'The EU's workforce is diverse; today's vote goes some way to ensure this diversity is represented at all levels.'
