Gerry Adams to Launch Young Voters Registration Drive in Cork

29 April, 2004

Gerry Adams will today launch a young voters registration drive in Cork. He will launch the drive outside the College of Commerce in Morrisons Quay at 12.45 .

A recent survey found that 20% of 18 - 25 year olds have not registered to vote for the elections in June. This amounts to 100,000 people not voting out of an estimated 500,000 eligible voters in this age range.

According to the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) the main cause of non-voting by young people is non registration. The system is cumbersome, inconvenient and time consuming. It is Sinn Féin policy to encourage as many people as possible ˆ no matter who they vote for ˆ to register for the elections in June.

Gerry Adams will be available to the Press outside the School of Commerce, Morrisons Quay at 12.45.
