Fine Gael and Labour have failed voters – Colreavy

6 July, 2011 - by Michael Colreavy TD

Sinn Féin TD for Sligo / North Leitrim Michael Colreavy has tonight criticised Fine Gael and Labour TDs for failing their voters by voting against a Sinn Féin bill calling on the Government to halt it's policy of cuts and closures regarding hospital services.

Deputy Colreavy called on TDs to help stop health closures by supporting Sinn Féin's bill.

“Tonight every Deputy in this chamber has to stand up and be counted. Some will have to decide whether they are here under false pretences and will have to deal with their conscience. Others will consider doing the honourable thing, the honest thing; they may vote against the government amendment and in favour of the Sinn Féin bill.

“No-one is looking for a General Hospital at every cross-roads as suggested insultingly by the Taoiseach this morning. But for pity’s sake take account of the reality of people’s lives in the West of Ireland and the distances we have to travel! Look at the map of Ireland and see the scarcity of health and other state services north of the Dublin/Galway line.”

He finished by calling on all TDs who had made promises during their election campaigns to vote with Sinn Féin or resign their seats as promised.

“Their choice is now clear: vote against the Fianna Fail and Government amendments and support the Sinn Féin bill. Otherwise they vote to support their party and vote against those they pretend to represent. Do the right thing or resign now.”
