Mallow Hospital news shows Emergency Dept closures will proceed – Ó Caoláin

7 July, 2011 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Commenting on the announcement by HSE Chief Executive Cathal Magee that the threatened closure of the Emergency Department at Mallow General Hospital will proceed in November 2011, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said:

“The announcement by the HSE Chief Executive Cathal Magee that the Emergency Department at Mallow General Hospital will close from November 2011 is very bad news for the communities served by that Hospital.

“This news, coming two days after the announced closure of the Roscommon Emergency Department, shows that the closure of such departments at hospitals across the State is proceeding under this Fine Gael Health Minister in just the same way as it proceeded under his predecessors.

“These closures are against the interests of patient safety and public pressure should be maintained on the Fine Gael/Labour Government to desist from the pursuit of this centralisation policy, a policy designed to facilitate cuts to vital hospital services.

“I call on Health Minister James Reilly to immediately order the cancellation of this intended closure at Mallow and the closure from Monday of the Emergency Department at Roscommon County Hospital and to set in train an evaluation of all the steps necessary and resources needed to facilitate the continuation of these valued and important hospital facilities and all others threatened with closure across our network of public acute hospital sites.” ENDS
