GSK job losses a devastating blow to Dungarvan - Cullinane

7 July, 2011

The 130 job losses announced at Glaxo Smithkline today comes as “a devastating blow to the town of Dungarvan” according to Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane.

The Sinn Féin workers rights spokesperson stated that he was very saddened to hear the news, and extended his sympathy to the workers and their families.

Senator Cullinane said:

“Unfortunately announcements such as this have become far too common in Ireland in recent years, and particularly so in West Waterford, which has been hit by closure upon closure, job loss upon job loss.

“This announcement will come as a devastating blow to Dungarvan town as Glaxo Smithkline is a huge employer. It is a very difficult time for those facing unemployment and for their families, and I wish to extend my sympathies to them."

Senator Cullinane further noted that the job losses were an illustration of the Government’s failure to address the unemployment crisis.

“The government must take urgent and meaningful action to deal with the jobs crisis. The jobs initiative seems to have been jobs negative, and job losses such as this are happening all the time.

“Places like East Cork and West Waterford have been hit particularly hard, and we badly need a new approach. The recent GNP figures which showed a fall of 4.3% are an illustration that austerity simply isn't working.

“The Government needs to respond to these job losses with decisive action, and take urgent steps to address the jobs crisis, both in Waterford, and nationally.”
