Anderson calls for winter fuel payment for cancer sufferers

11 July, 2011 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Junior Minister, Martina Anderson MLA (Foyle) has written to Health Minister, Edwin Poots requesting a meting with the Pink Ladies in an attempt to secure winter fuel payments for Cancer sufferers.

Martina Anderson said:"I have written to Health Minister, Edwin Poots on behalf of the Pink Ladies seeking a meeting  to discuss the potential of a winter Fuel Payment to those who are undergoing cancer treatment.  "I have pointed out to the Minister that many of those suffering from cancer and receiving treatment do not qualify for Winter Fuel payments even though the reality for many of those undergoing treatment, given their financial circumstances, is a case of “heat or eat.  This is intolerable! "At a recent meeting of the Social Development Committee evidence was given that there are some 600 cancer patients in most need of such support.  A grant of £200 would cost £120,000.  "I have suggested that the necessary funding could come from OFMdFM’s recently established £20m “Social Protection Fund” which is designed to help vulnerable individuals. I will discuss with the Minister the potential of his Department bringing forward a scheme under the Financial Assistance Act to address this pressing issue.
