Sinn Féin meet with Brendan Lillis

29 July, 2011 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA’s for West Belfast Jennifer McCann and Fra McCann have today met with seriously ill prisoner, Brendan Lillis who is currently being held in Maghaberry despite repeated calls for his release.

Speaking following the meeting Ms McCann said:

“Since our last visit Brendan Lillis condition has clearly deteriorated. He is not lucid and is clearly physically and mentally exhausted by his experience.

“This is absolutely no way to keep a seriously ill man and we are reiterating out call for his release.

“The Justice Minister, David Ford, on Wednesday stated he was seeking legal advice on this case. He needs to prioritise this as a matter of urgency as Brendan Lillis is seriously ill.

“He should be released immediately on humanitarian grounds as clearly he is no danger to the public. If he is released he can avail of medical treatment in a hospital setting surrounded by his family, not as currently is the case where he is held in an inadequate room which is virtually a cell as part of the prison hospital clinic.”
