Minister must re-think roads decision – Doherty

9 August, 2011 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty has condemned the decision of the Minister for Transport to suspend all major road projects that have not been started as a result of spending cutbacks.

Deputy Doherty said this decision was taken without any meaningful consultation with the National Roads Authority and without any local authorities and will have a huge impact on communities throughout the state.

Speaking today Deputy Doherty said:

“This is a ludicrous decision taken by the Minister without any consideration of the effect it will have on communities across the state.

“The Minister has taken this decision without any meaningful consultation with the National Roads Authority and without any consultation at all with local authorities.

“There has been no value for money assessment done in relation to this decision with many millions having already been spent.

“This decision will have a devastating effect not only for commuters but also for the economy as many jobs will be sacrificed as a result.

“Minister Varadkar must take the time to properly consider the consequences of the decision to suspend these projects.” ENDS
