McMullan warns of money scam
East Antrim Sinn Féin MLA, Oliver McMullan has warned of a money scam that is doing the rounds and has cautioned anyone who receives one of these letters to put it in the bin or notify the PSNI.
Oliver McMullan said:
“A member of my family recently received a letter from a Mr Eddie Li Kong claiming to work for the Shenzhen Development Bank in China. Mr. Kong claimed that a client of his Bank with a similar Christian name to my family member had died in a tragic road accident leaving a financial portfolio of $15million US and that he died intestate.
“He then suggested that if the correspondence was kept secret that since he had exclusive access to the file he could make my relative the beneficiary of these funds. The relative was then asked to contact Mr Kong by telephone, fax or e-mail which appeared at the beginning of the letter.“I have no doubt that the next step if contact was made would have been a request for personal and Bank details. I want to warn people that if they receive similar letters to put them in the bin immediately. If something looks too good to be true, it normally is. Do not under any circumstances give banking details or other personal information to anyone you do not know. Legitimate Financial Institutions never approach people for such information in this manner.”
