Crowe welcomes end of Hunger Strike

6 May, 2004

Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe has this evening welcomed the ending of the hunger strike undertaken by Tallaght-man Tom Sweeney, the victim of institutional abuse who has been protesting outside the Leinster House for over three weeks. The Dublin South West TD said Mr. Sweeney's decision to end his strike after 22 days would be a "huge relief to his family and friends who had become increasingly concerned about his health".

"Mr. Sweeney's case highlights many of the inadequacies in the redress system for abuse victims. It is clear that many, many people are not happy with the procedures, particularly around the issue of recounting their experience.

"It crucial that the Minister reviews the remit of this board to take into account the serious concerns of the victims and their representative groups." ENDS
