Higgins sentiments at odds with Labour policy in government – McDonald

10 October, 2011 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald has said that sentiments expressed by Labour Presidential candidate Michael D Higgins on the campaign trail are at odds with the disastrous policies Mr Higgins’s party is implementing in government.

Speaking this morning Mary Lou McDonald said:

“Sentiments expressed by Labour Presidential candidate Michael D Higgins regarding the importance of equality and social solidarity are unfortunately at odds with the actions of his party in Government.

“Labour’s disastrous policies are all about attacking the low paid and those on social welfare and bailing out the banks. Labour are a party that stands for austerity not equality.

“People need to remember that fine sentiments and lofty speeches are no substitute for political action. Candidates for government parties need to be judged on their actions as well as their words and on the actions of their party in government.”
