Sammy Wilson accused of making homophobic remarks in Council debate

7 May, 2004

Sinn Féin councillor Eoin O'Broin has written to the Chief Executive of Belfast City Council seeking an investigation into homophobic remarks made by DUP councillor Sammy Wilson during a debate on holding a civic reception for Lesbian and Gay Pride in the course of Tuesday's full council meeting.

Speaking today Cllr O'Broin said:

"During the course of a debate in Council Sammy Wilson made remarks that were clearly homophobic in nature. Such comments are as totally unacceptable in Belfast City Council as they would be anywhere else and are contrary to the council's good relations policy that was endorsed by all political parties.

"If Sammy Wilson had made such comments in relation to any other section or group within our society there would be a huge outcry. Homophobia, sectarianism and racism are all equally unacceptable. They have no place in our society and in abusing his position as a councillor Sammy Wilson is not only highlighting his own prejudice but sending out the clear message that the DUP think that homophobic attitudes are acceptable. Just as sectarian or racist comments are unacceptable so to are homophobic comments."
