Report shows dole clearly not a lifestyle choice – Ó Snodaigh

13 October, 2011 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on social protection Aengus Ó Snodaigh has welcomed the report published by the ESRI today which offers further proof that being on the dole is not a “lifestyle choice” as the Minister would have us believe.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said

“The Minister would have us believe that being on the dole is a ‘lifestyle choice’. Today's report from the ESRI is further proof that it is no such thing.

“The report confirms earlier research conducted by the department and highlighted by myself last month. The ESRI found that 80% of unemployed people would increase their income by at least 50% if they could get a job and just 3% are better off on the dole.

“Certain politicians, employers and commentators have been spreading the myth that people are happy to stay on the dole because social welfare payments are too high. It is time for those who have been banging this drum to admit that the real barrier to employment is the absence of job opportunities.

“We need to see some concrete steps from government to create jobs”.
