IMC has no role to play in implementation of agreement

7 May, 2004

Sinn Fein Assembly Group Leader, Newry Armagh MLA Conor Murphy commenting on the meeting between political parties and the IMC has said that the body has no role to play in the implementation of the agreement.

Mr Murphy said:

"The so-called Independent Monitoring Commission was established outside the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. It is not independent. It is a proxy for the same securocrats who are central to the state policy of collusion and who have done so much to damage the process up until now.

"The IMC has no credibility with the broad nationalist electorate and it should be done away with. It has no role to play in the full implementation of the agreement

"Meeting or not meeting the IMC is not our focus. We are more concerned about undoing the damage done by the enabling legislation and the discredited report and in breaking the current political impasse. ENDS
