Minister must establish inquiry into deception of Comhairle na hOspidéal regarding cutbacks in services at Louth County Hospital
Louth Sinn Féin T.D. Arthur Morgan has called for an immediate inquiry into the manner in which the NEHB proceeded with plans to close surgical services at Louth County Hospital after 5pm daily. Deputy Morgan was speaking following the revelations that Comhairle na hOspidéal was misled into believing that the proposed plan to close surgical services at Louth County Hospital after 5pm daily had the approval of the Medical Board at Louth County hospital.
Deputy Morgan said:
"I call on the Minister for Health and Children Mícheál Martin to immediately establish an inquiry to unravel the mess in the North Eastern Health Board.
"There are now allegations of fraud at a very senior level and the CEO Paul Robinson should be suspended until this matter is fully investigated. Comhairle na hOspidéal were told that the proposed plan to close surgical services at Louth County Hospital after 5pm daily had the approval of the Medical Board at Louth County hospital. We now know that this was not the case.
"The Medical Board have said they were not consulted about the plan and if they had been consulted they would not have agreed to it because they believe, as many of us do, that it is an unsafe plan.
"A number of serious questions now arise. Who misled or lied to Comhairle na nHospidéal? Was the CEO aware of the deception? Who else knew of the fraud? Nothing less than an inquiry will answer these questions.
"We have seen many scandals in the North Eastern Health Board area. We cannot afford this level of incompetence to continue." ENDS
