Sinn Féin calls for review of sentencing criteria
Sinn Victims Spokesperson Mitchel McLaughlin MLA (South Antrim) has called on Justice Minister David Ford to instigate a review of sentencing criteria following the latest violent attacks on elderly citizens.
Mr Mc Laughlin said:
“Attacks on vulnerable, elderly citizens seem to be increasing and the severity of violence being perpetrated against them reaching new lows. Recent attacks in the South Antrim and Belfast areas could quite easily have resulted in fatalities.
“The fact that they did not, should not minimise the trauma and fear experienced by these vulnerable senior citizens.
“It is obvious that the way in which current sentencing criteria are being applied is not acting as a deterrent to the miscreants who are carrying out these actions. I believe it is time that Justice Minister, David Ford instigates a review of the criteria to determine if the full powers available to the Courts are being applied in these cases. He should also examine whether Police resources are being adequately concentrated towards detection and apprehension of those involved in these crimes. Anyone caught attacking citizens in their homes should be pursued vigorously by the PSNI and dealt with severely by the Courts. CRÍOCH
