Finucane remarks a disgrace and an abuse of privilege - Gerry Kelly

7 November, 2011 - by Gerry Kelly

North Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said that Edwin Poots remarks today in the Assembly regarding murdered human rights lawyer Pat Finucane were a disgrace and an abuse of privilege.

“Just weeks before Pat Finucane’s death, Tory MP Douglas Hogg in the British Parliament accused some lawyers of working for the IRA. Edwin Poots has followed in that vein by trying to give some justification as to why he was murdered.

“Pat Finucane was not in the IRA and the consequence of Douglas Hogg’s remarks was that he was murdered by loyalists with the help of British state agents just weeks later, that is a fact. Pat Finucane was a human rights lawyer and was murdered for exactly that reason

“At a time when the Finucane family are experiencing continued hurt in their search for truth and justice, the Unionists not only tabled a petition of concern regarding the motion but then Edwin Poots attempted to justify why Pat Finucane was murdered.

“This was an abuse of privilege and a disgrace.”
