Redundancy scheme must be part of an overall package to reform the Prison Service
Sinn Féin MLA and Vice Chair of the Justice Committee, Raymond McCartney said the redundancy scheme to remove and replace over 600 prison officers must be part of an overall package to reform the Prison Service.
Raymond Mr McCartney:
“From Sinn Féin’s perspective we would like to see this coming forward, not as a redundancy package that is held in isolation, but as one of a number of fundamental steps towards the much needed reform of the Prison Service.
“It is vital to see the removal of 600 prison staff and a recruiting programme set in place to change the culture and practice within the Prison Service and bring it into the 21st Century.
“There has not been open recruitment in the prison service since 1994 but the problems highlighted in many recent reports persist, highlighting the need for transformation, reform and modernistaion.
“This can only come about with new staff and the exit of old staff and their old habits.”
