Doherty Welcomes Decision On GM Wheat

11 May, 2004

The Sinn Féin candidate for the EU elections in the North West, Pearse Doherty, has welcomed a decision by the US corporation Monsanto to abandon its production of a wheat variety that was genetically modified to resist one of the company's weed killers.

Mr Doherty said: "This decision will be welcomed by consumers and farmers right across Europe. Coming as it does at a time when there is massive pressure on the EU to lift its embargoes on GM, the decision by Monsanto must be seen as an admission that the propaganda campaign in favour of genetically modified food and crops has failed.

"In the light of this, I would reiterate my party‚s call on the Irish Government to withdraw its support for GM, and, in co-operation with the northern parties, to have the entire island declared a GM free zone. Sinn Féin will continue to work towards this, and will be making it a priority when elected to the European Parliament." ENDS
