Ó Caoláin slams Coalition on Cavan barracks closure
Cavan-Monaghan Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has slammed the decision of the Fine Gael-Labour Coalition Cabinet, confirmed on Tuesday afternoon by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny, to close Dún Uí Néill, the Defence Forces barracks in Cavan.
Deputy Ó Caoláin said:
“This is a disgraceful decision which disrupts the lives of 150 serving Defence Forces members and their families and deals a severe economic blow to the town of Cavan and its hinterland.
“The closure of Dún Uí Néill is taking place under the authority of Justice and Defence Minister Alan Shatter who has never once set foot in the barracks.
“I now believe that the reason Minister Shatter has not responded to my written representation of several weeks ago is that he had already made up his mind to close Dún Uí Néill. I believe his meeting with the families of Defence Forces members and elected representatives was a charade, knowing, as he did, that the barracks closures were already decided.
“The closure of Dún Uí Néill, the only purpose-built Defence Forces barracks in the state, raises serious questions for the three Government TDs in Cavan-Monaghan. They must now press the Minister, the Taoiseach and their Cabinet colleagues not to proceed with this closure. There is no economic justification for it but many negative economic consequences for Cavan and the other towns concerned – Castlebar, Clonmel and Mullingar.”
