Doherty welcomes recommendations on political donations

23 November, 2011

Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone Pat Doherty has welcomed the report by the Committee on Standards in Public Life calling on the Executive to introduce a timetable for making political donations public.

Speaking today Mr Doherty said:

“Sinn Féin have clearly stated that we want to see an end to the policy of keeping donations to political parties in the six counties secret. It is our view that the current threshold of £7,500 for reportable donations should be lowered to £500.

“There is no question that political parties need sufficient income to cover their expenditure and fundraising and donations are part and parcel of generating that income.

“However, justifiable public cynicism is generated when it is perceived that political parties are not being open and transparent about their financial affairs.

“Sinn Féin will continue to publish our accounts north and south for scrutiny and act in an open and transparent way. We would encourage all other parties to do likewise and support this recommendation by the Committee on Standards in Public Life.”
