Sinn Féin hold all-Ireland consultation on poverty

12 May, 2004

Sinn Fein MLA for north Belfast and Party spokesperson on poverty, Kathy Stanton, will be holding a wide-ranging consultation on the issue of poverty today at 2:00pm in Stormont. Those invited are groups involved in tackling poverty in those communities most affected throughout Ireland.

Speaking today Ms Stanton said:

"This is one in a number of meetings that seeks to provide room for policy formulation from below. We hope to address the issue of poverty on an All-Ireland basis, as it is clear that poverty does not recognise boundaries and the best way to tackle it is with an integrated, effective approach across the island of Ireland

"This process was based on the ANC Freedom charter which saw wide consultation with grassroots organisations in policy formulation in South Africa and has proved a massive success there. It is a process that offers the widest possible input from those in the community who deal with such issues day in, day out.

"The levels of poverty that we are witnessing today, in both relative and absolute terms, are totally unacceptable. Tackling inequality is one of the fundamental issues that must be effectively addressed if our society is to grow and the participation of those communities affected must be present." ENDS
