Commission of investigation required into Raphoe Diocese – Doherty

30 November, 2011 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Fein TD for Donegal South West Pearse Doherty TD has called for the holding of a Commission of investigation into the handling of clerical child sex abuse in the Diocese of Raphoe.

Speaking today Deputy Doherty said:

“I welcome the publication today of the report of the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church on the way in which allegations of sexual abuse against members of the clergy had been dealt with in the Diocese of Raphoe.

“The audit says significant errors of judgement were made by successive bishops when responding to abuse allegations.

“However there have also been criticisms of the lack of detail in the report and victims groups have expressed disappointment that more documentation and evidence of abuse was not published.

“In particular I am concerned by suggestions that letters of complaint written about Fr Eugene Green to previous Bishops of Raphoe seems to have been either lost or are no longer in existence.

“What is needed is a more comprehensive independent report along the lines of the Murphy Inquiry into the abuse scandal in the Cloyne diocese.” ENDS
