Continued rise in unemployment an indictment of failing government policy
Peadar Tóibín, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation has today’s live register figures demonstrate that the government policies are not delivering jobs.
Deputy Tóibín said, ‘Todays Live Register shows that 448,600 (14.5%) people are on the live register. Not only is the total number on the register increasing but also the number of long term unemployed. These figures are an indictment of this government and its failure to prioritise job creation.
“In October Enda Kenny told IBEC that the economic future was looking brighter and that unemployment was decreasing.
“Since then we have had two successive months of increased unemployment. We have had reduced growth predictions, increased emigration and a possible 20% unemployment rate.
“The response by the government has been more money to bond holders and promises of increases in VAT, a reduction in social protection, increases in fuel and energy costs and reduction in capital spend. Our businesses also face increasing rates and the lack of action on upward rent agreements.
“The policies of this government will only further depress our economy, increase unemployment and increase costs.
“It is time that the government listened to the people and fundamentally changed their approach. It is time that government put job recreation and employment at the centre of its policies.” ENDS
