Farcical pre-budget submission shows Fianna Fáil have learned nothing – Tóibín

30 November, 2011

Sinn Féin’s Peadar Tóibín has described as “farcical” the Fianna Fáil pre-budget submission which was launched today.

Deputy Tóibín said:

“Clearly Fianna Fáil has not learned a single lesson from the last election and is still deceiving voters with this farcical pre-budget submission.

“How can we be expected to take anything this party says seriously when they are the very ones who brought this economy to the brink of collapse, who oversaw massive levels of unemployment and who implemented the most savage attack on public services that this state has ever seen.

“It beggars belief that this party would advocate increasing the threshold for the Universal Social Charge to €8,000 when they are the very ones who implemented this unfair tax in the first place!

“The range of stealth taxes and charges in the document including the proposal to increase motor tax by 5%, a flat rate household charge of €100, an increase in carbon tax and a phasing out of rent relief really just show how out of step these people are. Have they learned nothing from their time in government? Have they no idea how much of an impact these measures would have on people who are already struggling to cope with this party’s last mess? These types of measures did not work before and will not work now. Neither Fianna Fail, Fine Gael nor Labour seem to have got this basic economic point.

“Clearly Sinn Féin is the only real opposition in the Dáil. Our pre-budget submission is radical, it is alternative and most importantly it is fair. This latest offering from Fianna Fáil is none of these things and just shows that they have nothing to offer the Irish public.”
