Ó Caoláin calls on the church and the State to ensure the highest standards of child protection
Speaking following the publication of the reviews by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church, Sinn Féin spokesperson on children Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has called on the church and the State to ensure that the highest standards of child protection are adhered to.
The Cavan-Monaghan TD said:
“A number of the reports produced today demonstrated that dioceses failed to respond adequately to clerical child sex abuse allegations. While the reports may conclude that lessons have been learned and most dioceses have implemented child protection guidelines, we must be cognisant that these reports were conducted by an organisation which is an integral part of the church body today. Furthermore this organisation has no statutory footing and received the full approval of the bishops of the dioceses before publication of the reports.
“Sinn Féin is now calling on the Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald to respond to these reports urgently and, if appropriate, to instigate a full inquiry in one or more of the dioceses concerned. There can be no delay on the part of the State responding to allegations of, or outstanding concerns regarding, child abuse.
“I will be asking the Minister for Children to address these issues, and all outstanding recommendations in previous child protection reports, as a matter of urgency.”
