Welcome for Proposed Climate Change Bill

2 December, 2011

Sinn Féin MLA and Environmental Spokesperson Willie Clarke has welcomed the commitment from Minister of the Environment Alex Atwood to bring forward a climate change bill.

Mr Clarke said,

“It is a positive move to bring forward a strategy in addressing the problems associated with climate change in the North. There is scientific evidence that the changes in our climate are posing problems for society and especially for sectors like farmers who have had to adjust to severe deviations in the weather patterns

“Sinn Féin have also brought forward proposals through our team in the Dáil and a Climate Change Bill is proposed for 2012. I would call on Minister Atwood to ensure that his Department works closely with their counterparts in the South to develop one strategy

“Ireland needs to be at the forefront in regards to moving away from a carbon constrained world; we will not prosper if we do not grasp the renewable opportunities that exist.A Climate Change bill with clear targets on the face of the Bill is essential to ensure future governments will not renege on targets and commitments in reducing our Carbon dependency.By the time we develop our legislation, targets will be clearer and each sector will play its part in committing to achievable targets.that would service this small island.

“Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre deBrun will this weekend travel to South Africa in order to participate in a UN Climate change debate so it i also  important that our strategy dove tails into any international strategy that is developed.”
