Doherty highlights Labour and Fine Gael conflict on neutrality
The Sinn Féin EU Candidate for the North West Constituency Pearse Doherty, has highlighted the glaring contradiction between Labour and Fine Gael on the issue of neutrality. Mr Doherty was referring to a speech in the Dáil by Labour TD Tommy Broughan in which he attacked Fine Gael over its policy, and assuring them that in no circumstances will Labour be abandoning neutrality.
Speaking today, Mr Doherty said:
"It is clear from Deputy Broughan's remarks that there are glaring contradictions within the so-called 'Coalition of the Caring‚' Fine Gael candidates are the foremost advocates of this state joining a military alliance. Fine Gael have made it one of their main policy demands and yet both Labour and the Greens still claim to be in favour of retaining our neutrality. How will such a conflict be resolved if these parties form a coalition and indeed how could these parties co-operate at European level on such an area of crucial importance?"
"It is clear, therefore, that Sinn Féin remains the only principled and reliable defender of Irish neutrality and we will continue to promote this in whatever forums we are elected to."ENDS
