Irish Presidency obsessed with concluding EU Constitution negotiations - Mary Lou McDonald

14 May, 2004

Sinn Féin Dublin EU candidate Mary Lou McDonald has today argued that the "Irish Presidency is so obsessed with concluding the EU Constitution within their Presidency term, that it is prepared to accept a botched job".

Ms McDonald made her comments as Irish proposals were revealed last night and were presented to EU member states. The proposals would mean that member states would lose their right to a Commissioner for one out of every three terms of the EU Parliament.

Speaking today, Ms McDonald said:

"Sinn Féin has warned in the past that the Irish Presidency is so obsessed with concluding the EU Constitution within their Presidency term, that it is prepared to accept a botched job. The current draft EU Constitution will further centralise power to the heart of the EU. And the irony is that the Irish Presidency will regard successful completion of treaty negotiations as a 'feather in their cap'.

"Whilst this proposal would only come into effect from 2014, it would mean that member states would lose their right to have a Commissioner for one out of every three terms. It is therefore important that we oppose this plan now, if it is agreed, it will become virtually impossible to challenge it in the future.

"Once again, citizens of the EU are witnessing the draining away of what little democracy is left within the institutions of the EU. Every member state should have the right to an EU Commissioner." ENDS
