Ballymurphy Massacre families lobby TDs and senators

8 December, 2011 - by Gerry Adams

This is Human Rights Week and the Ballymurphy Massacre Relatives group was in the Dáil today to brief TDs and Seanadóirí and to distribute a letter seeking support for their campaign. (See attachment)

The families also left a copy of the letter for An Taoiseach Enda Kenny in Government Buildings who has agreed to meet them.

The visit was sponsored by Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams TD.

Speaking after the visit Mr. Adams said:

“The families made a huge impact on those TDs and Seanadoirí they met today. Their accounts of the deaths of their fathers and mother were moving and distressing.

“Recently the Attorney General in the north ordered new inquests into ten of the eleven people from the greater Ballymurphy area who were shot dead by the British Parachute Regiment 40 years ago.

“This decision represents a landmark legal judgement which provides the families with an opportunity to get to the truth about the killing of their loved ones.

“None of those killed had any connection to any armed group. They were all innocent civilians and their deaths were part of a planned policy by the British government to pacify the community.

“The families are seeking a thorough international investigation and an apology from the British government which recognises the innocence of their loved ones.”
