Cancer sufferers winter payment welcome - Brady

8 December, 2011 - by Mickey Brady

Sinn Féin MLA and spokesperson on Welfare, Mickey Brady, has welcomed the announcement by the Executive that cancer sufferers who are receiving treatment are now to receive £100 as a winter fuel payment.

Speaking today Mr Brady said:

“This is very welcome news and something which Sinn Féin have been campaigning on for some time now.

“Those who undergo treatment for cancer can have a reduced immune system and are also faced with the prospect of having to leave work therefore facing the prospect of financial difficulties.

“Taken together these two factors indicated the pressing need to stop those suffering from cancers falling into fuel poverty and compounding their illness and hardship.

“This is an example of the Executive identifying an issue that clearly affects vulnerable people and has brought forward a mechanism to alleviate the difficulties that this section of our community are facing.”
