Deal gives Brussels even greater say in Ireland than EU/IMF programme.
Speaking today (Sunday 11 December 2011) Sinn Féin vice president, Mary Lou McDonald TD said “the deal agreed by 26 EU leaders on Friday gives the European Commission and European Court of Justice greater powers over Irish economic affairs than those currently held by the Troika”.
Deputy McDonald said:
“Friday’s hastily cobbled together EU 26 agreement gives the European Commission and European Court of Justice greater powers over Irish economic affairs than those currently held by the Troika.
“Unelected Eurocrats in Brussels will get an even greater say in budgetary and fiscal policy than under the current EU/IMF austerity programme.
“The deal introduces a draconian 0.5% of GDP deficit ceiling into constitutional law, condemning Ireland to a decade of crippling austerity and economic stagnation.
“It will block economic growth, lead to greater poverty and unemployment and continue to destabilise the single currency.
“In Ireland it means more austerity budgets beyond 2015, in order to reach the damaging and arbitrary deficit target of 0.5%.
“Fine Gael and Labour must come clean with the electorate and tell them that they have signed up to austerity budgets for the remainder of their term of office.
“In the final analysis Irish citizens must have their say on any agreement with such far reaching consequences. The government must commit clearly to a referendum on this issue.’
