Climate deal leaves much yet to achieve - de Brun

12 December, 2011 - by Martina Anderson MEP

As delegates from over 190 countries reached a deal on how to cut carbon emissions and tackle climate change, Bairbre de Brun MEP said:

"We need to recognise that even the best possible outcome from Durban still only takes us half way down the road we need to travel. We must return from Durban determined to raise ambition levels and shorten time frames. 2020 is far too late to begin implementation"

Ms de Brun, who returns to Europe from the climate talks continued.

"Delegates in Durban agreed on a range of issues including emissions cuts and finance to help tackle climate change in developing countries, through what they describe as''an agreed outcome with legal force''.

"However all depends now on whether countries truly co-operate to reach the common goal of preventing dangerous climate change.

"There is now an urgent need for countries to increase the level of ambition and to add further and more binding pledges and actions to what has been agreed here. We will all lose if countries now seek loopholes in the text for some very short term national advantage, or even just to create difficulties for competitors."
