Ellis ejected from Dáil as he defends EBS workers
Sinn Féin TD Dessie Ellis was today ejected from the Dáil chamber after accusing the Tánaiste of misleading the house when he described the payment being withheld from EBS workers as a Christmas bonus.
Deputy Ellis said the payment is not a Christmas bonus but part of the workers’ annual wage that the company is contractually obliged to pay.
Speaking after the encounter in the Dáil today Deputy Ellis said:
“Eamon Gilmore should be ashamed of himself for engaging in this type of spin. The payment being withheld from these workers is not a bonus payment. It is part of the workers’ annual wage which the company is contractually obliged to pay.
“In describing it as a bonus the Tánaiste is engaging in a spin exercise designed to cover up this blatant abuse of workers’ rights.
“This is particularly disappointing as it comes from a Labour Party Tánaiste, a party that was once known for defending the rights of workers. Eamon Gilmore should know better.” ENDS
