Team Ireland approach is what’s needed on Fisheries – Colreavy

18 December, 2011 - by Michael Colreavy TD

Sinn Féin Agriculture, Fisheries and Food spokesperson Michael Colreavy TD, today welcomed the positive results from the December Council fisheries negotiations, that concluded in the early hours of Saturday morning, from Ireland north and south.

Michael Colreavy said:

“It is good news that Irish fishermen are pleased with results of the negotiations and I welcome the fact that our fleet can be put back to sea. I particularly welcome the news that the Sinn Féin Fisheries Minister in the north of Ireland Michelle O’Neill and Simon Coveney worked very closely together during the course of these negotiations.

“It was this collaborative effort that produced the result of no cuts in quota for our prawn fishermen in the Irish Sea when they were facing a possible 19% cut. This will help save fishermen’s livelihoods, as over 90% of the northern fleet fish for prawns, and also vital onshore fish processing jobs”

“I also understand that Michelle O’Neill was instrumental in convincing the British and German delegations that they needed to act to address very serious concerns being raised by Simon Coveney on issues over days at sea and those issues were able to be resolved in favour of Irish fishermen by the conclusion of the negotiations”

“This Team Ireland approach is what we need to see in Europe, and indeed elsewhere, due to the results for Irish fishermen north and south it can produce.” ENDS
