Government looking to sweeten austerity deal – Crowe
Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe has accused the government of seeking a bribe from the EU in order to pass a referendum that will inflict a decade of austerity on the Irish people.
Deputy Crowe was speaking today in response to comment from Fine Gael TD Brian Hayes who said the EU would need to cut Ireland’s debt in order to pass any referendum on an EU deal.
“Nobody has any trust in this government to negotiate in the interest of the Irish people. Enda Kenny went to Europe last week and didn’t even bring up the Irish debt situation in any formal manner.
“What Brian Hayes is now seeking is a bribe from the EU in order to sweeten a deal that will inflict a decade of devastating austerity on the Irish people.
“The most recent CSO figures have shown that austerity is not working. The Irish people should reject any deal that enshrines more austerity.” ENDS
