O’Brien calls for continued funding for Dial to Stop Drug Dealing

5 January, 2012 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson, Jonathan O’Brien TD, has condemned today’s announcement that funding for the highly successful Dial to Stop Drug Dealing initiative has been has been ended and called for the funding to be reinstated and put on a permanent footing.

The Cork North Central TD said:

“Dial to Stop Drug Dealing was an exceptionally valuable scheme at minimal cost. It was a highly successful initiative for which Sinn Féin has long campaigned. Its funding should not have been cut, but should have been extended and placed on a permanent footing.

“From midnight tomorrow, 6 January a recorded message will replace the phone number.

“The Dial to Stop Drug Dealing campaign succeeded in raising awareness of the drug situation in areas and empowered people to report drug-related activity without fear of being identified. There is a huge gulf between the gardaí and people in working class communities and this anonymous non-garda phone line helped to bridge that gap.

“This action will impact negatively in any strategy that attempts to reduce drug use or drug crime.”
