Doherty welcomes Rural Social Scheme

17 May, 2004

The Sinn Féin Candidate for the North West, Pearse Doherty, has welcomed this morning's launch by Minister Eamon O Cuiv, of the Rural Social Scheme which will provide part-time employment to farmers and fishermen on low incomes. The scheme will cover a variety of community based employments and will be delivered by local LEADER bodies.

Mr. Doherty said:

"Sinn Féin welcomes any steps that are taken to alleviate the hardships that are currently facing many families in rural and coastal communities. I know from my county, and from travelling extensively over the past month, that a scheme such as this is badly needed.

"It is also clear, however, that the North West requires much deeper structural changes and proactive efforts to improve the livelihood of small farmers and fishermen, and to provide alternative employment opportunities. Having said that, however, it would be cynical of me not to commend any effort to address the problems that beset rural communities at the present time."ENDS
