McKay welcomes Education Minister's successful Budget Acquisition

11 January, 2012

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Daithi McKay has welcomed the confirmation by Education Minister, John O Dowd that he has successfully negotiated additional funding for the Education Budget.

Mr McKay stated,

"Sinn Féin has shown its commitment to the education of our children by instigating a radical overhaul of our education system and the news that Minister John O’Dowd has secured substantial monies for schools underscores this commitment.

“It was no secret that schools were finding it hard to meet the current budget restrictions imposed due to the British Tory imposed cuts to the Executive Budget.

“This extra monies will be welcome news to the many schools that are working under extreme pressure to maintain high educational standards and help alleviate some of those pressures.

"The Education Minister, John O' Dowd assured educationalists before Christmas that he would fight for additional funding to alleviate the worst effects of the Tory cuts on school budgets and has now delivered on that promise

"I have no doubt that most Principals of will welcome this news which will hopefully assist them in making their budgets more manageable over the coming years and deliver the first class education our children deserve.
