Device Left Outside Sinn Féin Members Home

17 May, 2004

North Antrim Sinn Féin Assembly member Philip McGuigan has said that he is in no doubt that unionist paramilitaries are responsible for leaving a device outside the home of a Sinn Féin member in Ballymena.

Mr McGuigan said:

" Within the past week unionist paramilitaries in Ballymena have been responsible for issuing death threats to a local teenager and are now responsible for leaving a device outside the home of a Sinn Féin member in the town.

" There is clearly an agenda at work to intimidate the local nationalist and republican population. Despite this the response of the various unionist politicians in the town has been muted to say the least.

" There was a fear expressed by republicans at the time of the publication of the IMC report that its flawed contents and unsubstantiated allegations made against Sinn Féin would be used by unionist paramilitaries as cover for attacks on Sinn Féin members. Unfortunately events overnight would seem to confirm this.

" Sinn Féin will not be intimidated by unionist paramilitaries or anyone else. We will continue to provide a service for our constituents and continue to work within our communities to advance and develop our republican aims and objectives." ENDS
