McDonald calls for protection of DEIS schools
Closing Sinn Féin’s Dáil debate on the Government’s decision to cut teaching supports in DEIS schools Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has called on Minister for Education and Skills to immediately reverse his decision to cut 428 posts teaching posts from 270 primary and 163 post-primary DEIS schools.
Deputy McDonald said:
“There should be no question of dismantling guidance provision; undermining rural schools and above all there should be no question of damaging or disrupting DEIS school system.
“There are legacies at play here, legacies of inequality and if this government was worth its salt it would address without fear of the EU or IMF.
“Sinn Féin’s arguments to maintain current levels of teaching posts in DEIS schools is simply a defence of our child citizens’ rights. Children have a right to equality of opportunity.
“Whilst Labour and Fine Gael back benchers have heralded the review of DEIS schools as a u-turn of the cut in teaching support for DEIS schools the Minister for Education and Skills has not yet committed to withdraw the announced cuts in teaching supports to DEIS schools. The review announced yesterday by the Minister could amount to no more than a 4 week stay of execution.
“Sinn Féin is calling on the Minister for Education and Skills to immediately reverse his decision to cut 428 posts teaching posts from 270 primary and 163 post-primary DEIS schools.” ENDS
