O’Neill opens Cereals Conference

17 January, 2012 - by Michelle O'Neill

The first major event to celebrate Greenmount Campuses Centenary year took place today. The ‘Conference for Cereal Growers’ was opened by Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill and was attended by over 200 people from across the sector.Addressing the delegates Minister O’Neill said: “

The arable sector across Ireland has a reputation for being progressive and for striving to improve technical efficiency and business competitiveness. Over the years cereal growers have been supported by research and development, knowledge and technology transfer and training and business development programmes.”

She continued:

“However, it is you who have adopted and embraced new knowledge, technology and developed your skills. You have shown resourcefulness, adaptability and resilience in responding to many challenges over the years.”

The Minister said that the local cereal sector has punched well above its weight in terms of technical efficiency improvements.

She added: “Due to the longer term trend of downward pressure on cereal enterprise margins from rising input costs and increased grain market volatility, sound business management is critical to sustaining the competitiveness of the cereal enterprises. I am confident that the sector will continue to rise to this challenge.”
