Illegal settlements must end immediately – Mac Lochlainn

18 January, 2012 - by Pádraig Mac Lochlainn

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn will today challenge Israeli Knesset Speaker, Reuven Rivlin when he meets with the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade on the on-going Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories which are illegal under international law.

Deputy Mac Lochlainn described the illegal settlements as the “one true remaining obstacle to peace between Israel and Palestine”.

He said:

“Today I will avail of the opportunity provided by this meeting to tell Speaker Rivlin that the Irish people demand an end to the illegal Israeli settlements and ethnic cleansing taking place in the occupied Palestinian territories.

“A new high level European Union report recently leaked to the Haaretz and London Independent newspapers reveals the devastating impact of these settlements fully backed by the Israeli state over the years. The state of Israel is presiding over the construction of these settlements in complete defiance of international law and numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions.

“Yesterday a cross party group of TDs and Senators including myself and Sinn Féin President, Gerry Adams met with the Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland, Dr Hikmat Ajjuri. He outlined to us the profound impact on his people, of Israel’s oppressive policies for decades that have been shamefully condoned by the International community.

“I will be stating to Speaker Rivlin and those accompanying him on this visit that the Irish people do not condone their actions. That we condemn Israel for their illegal and apartheid policies and demand an immediate end to these illegal settlements and the re-commencement of negotiations with the representatives of the Palestinian people aimed at justice and lasting peace.”
