Sleepy workers tag a disservice to those in employment
Sinn Féin East EU candidate Cllr John Dwyer has today reacted to an online survey, which said that workers in the 26 Counties were the most likely in Europe to fall asleep at work. Cllr Dwyer said that the survey 'did not reflect reality' and that 'Irish workers were amongst the most productive in the EU'.
Speaking today, Cllr Dwyer said:
"Many workers will react with anger to this online survey, which suggests that we are the sleepiest workers in the EU. The message that this sends out, is that we are a lazy and unmotivated workforce - nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is that Irish workers are amongst the most productive in the EU.
"Having said all that, I do recognise that many workers in this state are under pressure to work extra overtime hours to make ends meet. With the spiralling cost of houses, rent, childcare costs and an overpricing culture prevailing, it is no surprise that workers feel they must work many extra hours just to stay afloat financially. Indeed many people are working more than one job because the Government has failed to tackle the problem of low paid employment and refuses to take the low-paid out of the tax net.
"The Government of this State and the EU both need to do more to enhance workers rights and entitlements to ensure a better quality of life for workers and their families. There needs to be a greater emphasis on work-life balance to ensure that workers are not overworked and tired." END
