Orde challenged over murder bid on SF Member

18 May, 2004

Sinn Féin Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness MP has challenged the PSNI Chief Constable to explain the PSNI position regarding a murder attempt on a Sinn Féin member in Ballymena yesterday.

Mr McGuinness said:

" Yesterday two bombs were placed outside the home of a Sinn Féin member in Ballymena. There is no doubt that this murder attempt was carried out by unionist paramilitaries. It was only through the man's vigilance that he wasn't seriously injured or killed.

" Despite this the PSNI declared that they were keeping an 'open mind' on the murder bid. This contrasts sharply with the approach of Hugh Orde in other incidents when he is never shy about coming out and pointing fingers even when he has no evidence to back up his claims.

" Hugh Orde is politicking with this incident. If this had been a murder bid on a member of any other party Hugh Orde would have been out in the media making a pronouncement. Instead the PSNI are allowing the unionist paramilitary gang responsible for the murder bid to hide behind their open mind theory. This is unacceptable and Hugh Orde should now explain publicly the position which his force has adopted regarding this incident." ENDS
