O'Donnell concern that East Belfast killing may mark start of another loyalist feud

18 May, 2004

Commenting on the killing of a man in the Montgomery Road area this morning, Sinn Féin Representative for East Belfast Cllr. Joe O'Donnell said that people will be nervous that the killing may mark the start of another period of loyalist feuding.

Cllr. O'Donnell said:

" Details of the exact nature of this mornings killing in East Belfast are not yet clear. However reports would indicate that the killing is related to ongoing tensions within the various unionist paramilitary organisations.

" People in East Belfast generally will be nervous that this killing will mark the beginning of yet another period of internecine loyalist feuding. Nationalists in the area will be concerned that this sort of internal loyalist feuding will eventually lead to attacks on the local nationalist population particularly as we approach the summer marching season.

" So I would appeal to people to be calm and for those within the unionist community to use whatever mechanisms exist to ensure that this situation does not escalate and does not have a knock on effect in relation to interfaces in the area." ENDS
