Gerry Adams welcomes IFTA honour for Fionnuala Flanagan

Responding to the news that Irish actor, Fionnuala Flanagan, is to be honoured by the Irish Film and Television Academy with a Lifetime Achievement Award, Sinn Féin president, Gerry Adams TD, sent her his warmest congratulations.

He said that her 50-year career on stage and screen, has been marked by “the wonderful performances of a beautiful, talented woman”.

“Fionnuala Flanagan has been an iconic figure for Irish America for decades and has never lacked the courage to express her republican ideology. Her support for Martin McGuinness’ presidential bid was much appreciated and very influential.

“While becoming an international film star, she has been a staunch supporter of the Irish film industry and has earned the admiration of her fellow-actors while working here and in the US.

“I have the greatest respect for Fionnuala Flanagan and I am delighted to see that the Irish Film and Television Academy will honour her for such a brilliant career. I have no doubt that we have a lot more to enjoy in coming years,” he added.

Ms Flanagan will receive her Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony in the Convention Centre, Dublin tomorrow.
